My Favorite Trek: Interview with the new President, October

It is with great pleasure that I introduce our new UCIP President, October.  I’ve had the pleasure of knowing her for many years now in the simming world, and I feel that our organization is going to be in very good hands going forward.  So without further ado, please enjoy this interview with October, and congratulations!

Name (character): Rochelle Andreevna Ivanova

Rank: Commodore

Sim: USS Vindicator

Position: Commanding Officer

UCIP Discord Nick: October

Favorite Star Trek episode? “The Measure of a Man” – The Next Generation : Season 2; Episode 9

Why? Honestly… Because it was ahead of its time talking about what it takes for something to be considered “sentient”, not so much even human, but sentient. It argued more than just the a-typical “self awareness” psychology that is often attempted to be measured by whether or not a species / creature can “identify” itself in the mirror, but went so much deeper into what makes us all our own person and what it means to qualify as being alive and to possess a “soul”. It paralleled arguments that are still being made today to protect “non-human persons” and yeah… Just loved the depths of the episode and its rich psychological undercurrent.

Favorite Star Trek series? Toss up between TNG and DS9

Why? Character development, storytelling, acting, and periods of Trek history covered during the duration of each series.

Favorite Star Trek film? Star Trek II : The Wrath of Khan or Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home

Why? Ok… Who doesn’t love Ricardo Montalban as Khan Noonien Singh and that iconic line “I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her, marooned on a dead planet… Buried alive. Buried alive.”? and then again… I adore whales and the idea of a Bird-of-Prey decloaking in front of a whaling vessel? Hilarious. I’m here for it.

What year did you begin simming? 2000 but it wouldn’t be until… 2006? That I joined UCIP. Pretty sure it was 2006.

What sim was it? USS Warrior

What keeps you simming today? The story building, the group of writers on the Vindicator that have become my extended family, the fanbase we’ve built and un paralleled legacy we’ve created… I’d be lynched if I pulled the plug.

Favorite non-Trek series? You ask tough questions… Ok… There’s a few. Outlander (I was a huge fan just of the novels long before Sam Heughan took his shirt off as Jamie Fraser in the TV series, thank ya muchly), The Last Kingdom (loved it and then started reading the Saxon Stories written by Bernard Cornwell because I wanted more, and not just more Uhtred), Firefly because Firefly, Letterkenny because it’s spot on about rural Canadian life and it brings back great memories of my time spent in the Great White North, and many many more… Including Star Wars, if you can call that a series. More or less if it’s Sci-Fi or Historical Fiction, I’m probably watching/reading it already.

Favorite non-Trek film? Man… I can’t just pick ONE but yeah sure… We’ll go with The Last Unicorn.

Favorite book (fiction or non)? The Outlander series… The historical integrity is insane and the romance doesn’t hurt a bit. They’re NOT romance novels, they’re true historical fiction. If you go into them looking for smut, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Sorry, not sorry.

Favorite musician or band? Righteous Brothers, Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin, Goo Goo Dolls… I have a very eclectic taste in music so yeah… I can waste a lot of space answering this question

Favorite superhero? Batman and/or Ironman.

If you could have any super power, what would it be? Pretty sure I could be happily with the ability to read minds. Would save me a lot of time and effort dealing with people.

Favorite place you’ve ever ever visited? Brigadoon, Western Australia. Would go back in half a heartbeat.

Place you’ve never been that you want to go to? Scotland, Ireland, Pretty much all of Europe, Greece, Jordan, India, China, Antarctica… I’m a history and adventure fiend.

Favorite food? Sushi closely followed by just about anything Italian or Cantonese.

Coke or Pepsi? Coke.

Lennon or McCartney? Lennon.

Star Trek or Star Wars? They both have their merits, I can’t pick between them as they’re two very VERY different specimens of the Sci-Fi genre.
