Basic Sim Guide

GENERAL OVERVIEW

"Sim" comes from the word "simulation." Here in UCIP, "simming" is just another word for roleplaying online. When you sim, you and your fellow roleplayers invent fictional characters, then collaborate to write those characters' experiences together. Basically, when you sim, you're playing a game of "let's pretend" using email, IRC, or a combination of both. UCIP sims take place in the Star Trek universe, but you don't have to be a Star Trek buff to participate.

If you haven't already, join UCIP by applying for an available position in one of its sims. Once you're accepted, your In Character (IC) involvement with UCIP will be from the viewpoint of your character.

Create your character with a background and a history. This allows other people on the sim and within UCIP to understand who your character is. It also enhances sim experiences, giving your character a history that affects the way he sees and responds to his present situation.

When you sim, your character will perform duties similar to those of canon Star Trek characters. Like them, your sim crew will face scientific, diplomatic, combat, interpersonal, and unexpected challenges.

As you gain experience in simming, you will learn that adding small subplots is often encouraged. You will also discover what is and isn't appropriate. When in doubt about something you wish to do, always remember to check with your department head (DH), executive officer (XO), and commanding officer (CO).

Legacy Courses

These courses have been retired, they may be reactived in the future

Basic Sim Guide - Email

This Course trains Cadets in the skills and information they will need to be able to SIM in UCIP.

The process involves reading the Basic SIMGuide, and undertaking a Comprehensive Examination via email.

The purpose of the examination is to ensure that the student has read the Basic SIMGuide.

Following completion of the Comprehensive Exam, the student will have to attend a Training SIM.

The student will be evaluated on their SIMming skills.

Basic Sim Guide - IRC

This Course trains Cadets in the skills and information they will need to be able to SIM in UCIP.

The process involves reading the Basic SIMGuide, and undertaking a Comprehensive Examination via email.

The purpose of the examination is to ensure that the student has read the Basic SIMGuide.

Following completion of the Comprehensive Exam, the student will have to either attend a Training SIM, or take an EMail Practical Exam.

Counseling Course

Counselors act as general overseers of the crew's mental well-being. They give advice and guidance for problems that crewmembers may have. If necessary, they can provide psychiatric and psychological treatment and care. Counselors can also refer clients to other medical personnel for more conventional treatments.

Diplomacy Course

In the world of Star Trek, diplomats have been in the core of all alliances and non-aggression treaties, in trade agreements and tools for the military, as well as provide cultural expertise and mediation between societies. Diplomat's primary tool of choice is not a phaser or a sword, but their words.

Engineering Course

Engineering personnel provide the necessary repair and upkeep of equipment aboard ship. It is suggested that prospective Engineers select one (or more) Engineering skills to specialize in because the Confederation encourages research and development of newer and better systems.

Enlisted Course

The ships in UCIP are not run entirely by officers. The vast majority of those aboard are enlisted personnel. The enlisted crew serves on the bridge, maintains security, performs basic medical treatment, helps repair the ship, and provide a source of training for the junior officers on the ship, to give a brief (and all too incomplete) listing of the contribution of enlisted personnel.

Fighter Pilot Course

Fighter Pilots are trained to fly combat shuttlecraft and runadbouts launched from a carrier or other starship. Usually pilots are part of the Confedeations Marine branch, however, an increasing number of starships are becoming equipped with fighter squadrons. Pilots trained in this course are also qualified to pilot normal shuttlecraft.

Helm Course

Helm and Navigation personnel provide the ship with pilots and co-pilots. They also provide the ship with experienced Shuttlecraft and Runabout pilots and co-pilots. It is highly recommended that those who take the Helm course also take the Operations Course.

History Course

This course is essential to understanding the In Character history of UCIP. It is highly recommended for any aspiring member of UCIP.

Judge Advocate General Course

Starfleet's Judge Advocates are responsible for the investigation, prosecution, and defense of the men and women enlisted in Starfleet. In addition, Starfleet Judge Advocates assist in the development and ratification of treaties and act as legal advisors to members of the Federation Admiralty.

Marine Course

Starfleet Marines are exceptionally well trained and capable, even by Starfleet standards. They are meant to operate primarily on planetary surfaces, both land and water, but are also trained to participate in space-based operations as well. Their skills reflect the fact that they frequently have to operate in a long-range reconnaissance fashion, often with little or no support from Starfleet.

Medical Course

Medical personnel on a Ship oversee the health and physical safety of the crew. Those training in the field of Medicine usually select an alien physiology to specialize in other than their own. Students taking the Medical course become trained in the use of medical equipment and medicines.

Operations Course

This is the course for Cadets who wish to pursue advancement in the command line fields of the Confederation. The Operations course provides an interface between the day-to-day normal activities of the crew on board ship and the command personnel. Operations personnel study a program designed to give them a working knowledge of all other divisions in the Confederation

Science Course: General

Science personnel provide the investigative research for ships and transmit that information back to UCIP Command. Science personnel are also useful on landing parties and at Starbases. Those choosing Science as a career usually go on to specialize in a certain field such as Astrophysics and Xenobiology.

Science Course: Astrophysics

This course is to spark the student's interest in discovering how our worlds all came to be, the origins of and the future of the universes around us. Varios areas of astrophysics and basic cosmology will be touched on during thise course; this information being merely the basics and not anything overly technical. Most of the facts are known or speculaged on by today's scientific community. As more details are discovered, this course will be updated to reflect the increased knowledge.

Requirements:

Science Course: General

Security/Tactical Course

Security forces provide basic police duties on ship, as well as protective duties to landing parties. The chief of Security also runs the Tactical systems such as weapons and shields.

Senior Officer Training Course

The Senior Officer's Training course is the foundation and cornerstone for the Command Course, and is designed to assist department heads in running their departments. it is an important class for all officers, because it introduces the rudoments of command, and addresses some of the issues that simmers wanting to command will face.
